Promotion of the Archaeological Site of Zominthos, Municipality of Anogeia, Regional Unit of Rethymno

The Archaeological Site of Zominthos is located 7 km southeast of the town of Anogeia, at an altitude of 1200 meters. The site has a long and continuous history, beginning in the Minoan period and extending through to the Venetian era. In order to render the site accessible to the public, the project titled "Promotion of the Archaeological Site of Zominthos, Municipality of Anogeia, Regional Unit of Rethymno" has been under implementation since 2021.

Within the framework of the project, the following works have been carried out thus far: trial trenches were conducted at the planned locations for the construction of the ticket house, the parking area, and other spots as deemed necessary, construction of a ticket house, a paved entrance and waiting area, sanitary facilities, and a parking area, erection of a stone boundary wall demarcating the surrounding area. replacement of the existing fence with a new one, creation of a small stone paved plateau to define the entrance area, installation of stone benches outside the entrance, construction of septic tank, creation of an auxiliary entrance, extension of the existing permanent network of stone-paved paths using local stone slabs, repair and supplementation of existing wooden ramps and railings along the current visitor route, as well as the construction of new ones for accessibility in areas with elevation changes, formation of temporary pathway sections using reversible and reusable materials, designation of resting points along the route, construction of the parking area, installation of road signs, directional and informational signage along the route from the parking area to the entrance of the archaeological site, in the waiting area, and along the visitor path, accessibility infrastructure: placement of informational and directional signs with high contrast and large characters to ensure visibility, positioned at low height for accessibility by wheelchair users, installation of an introductory informational sign at the entrance, as well as dissemination material (leaflet) in Braille script, preparation of conservation studies for the ancient architectural remains, fire safety studies, architectural and structural studies for fire compartmentation, structural assessment of the ancient buildings, and rainwater runoff management studies.

The project was initially included in the ΕΣΠΑ 2014–2020 and subsequently transferred to the ΕΣΠΑ 2021–2027.
